Missing Scene From Continuum
“Listen, can you make a phone call for
me?”
“Certainly, Colonel.”
Jack handed the communication officer
the number. “Somewhere I can take it privately?”
The young man motioned over his
shoulder. “Captain assigned you quarters. Rogers will show you.”
“Thank you.”

Jack paced the small cabin, his mind
returning again and again to the words that guy, that Daniel, had said. It
wasn’t so much what he said, but how he said it. Matter-of-fact,
emotionless, as if he’d repeated those words over and over. And Jack had to
admit, the man had a strange intensity about him. Instead of the courtesy you
would afford a stranger, he spoke in an all too familiar manner. As if, Jack
admitted, the two had argued before. And often.
The phone beeped to indicate his call
had gone through. Jack stretched out on the bunk and grabbed the phone. “Hey,
kid, what’s happening?”
“Dad, something wrong?”
“What? I can’t call my son at college
and make sure he’s not flunking out?”
Jack heard the exasperated sigh. “Dad,
you saw my grades. I couldn’t keep my scholarship if I were failing.” There was
a long silence. “Is Mom okay?”
“Your mom’s fine.”
“So why are you calling me out of the
blue on a Wednesday night?”
“I just…someone up here said something
that made me realize I hadn’t talked to you for awhile.” Jack jammed the pillow
more comfortably behind his head. “So, tell me what’s going on.”
